Genomic Tracking of Antimicrobial Resistance in Armenia

This programme aims to implement genomic epidemiology approaches to characterize the genetic determinants of antimicrobial resistance, identify transmission pathways, and monitor the dissemination of high-risk bacterial clones across healthcare settings in Armenia. Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS), bioinformatics analyses, and integration of epidemiological data, the project will investigate the priority drug-resistant pathogens associated with the spread of difficult-to-treat infections in Armenia. The generated data will provide critical insights into the evolution and spread of antimicrobial resistance in Armenia, helping public health authorities develop targeted interventions to reduce the burden of drug-resistant infections. Current research activity: i) in-depth characterization of the key bacterial pathogens associated with the spread of difficult-to-treat infections in Armenia to improve antimicrobial therapy approaches; ii) isolation of new bacteriophages that are active against multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens to develop alternative or complementary treatment options for drug-resistant infections.
